Cleared woodland edge after tree and vegetation work in West Cumbria

Straight felling or sectional dismantling

Where there is room, a tree is felled in one controlled cut, which is quick and cost-effective. Where there is not, it comes down piece by piece: climbed or accessed by MEWP, with limbs and trunk sections lowered on rigging so that nothing touches what is underneath.

Most of the removals we carry out in West Cumbria are the second kind: trees that have outgrown their position, lean over extensions, or shade whole gardens. As an IPAF-certified MEWP operator, Mitchell can also take down trees that are too dangerous to climb, such as storm-damaged or heavily decayed stems, working safely from a platform.

What happens to the wood

Everything is cleared as standard. Logs and brash are chipped and removed, and the site is raked and left tidy. If you would prefer to keep the timber for firewood, we cut it to length and stack it, which usually reduces the price.

If you would like the stump removed as well, stump grinding is quoted at the same visit. Having both done together costs less than two separate jobs.

Protected trees

Before any removal we check whether the tree is covered by a Tree Preservation Order or stands in a conservation area, which is common in parts of Whitehaven, Cockermouth, St Bees and around Keswick. If consent or notice is required, we handle the application with the council as part of the job.

Tree Removal & Felling questions

How much does it cost to remove a tree?

It depends on the size of the tree, how close it stands to buildings, and access for equipment and clearance. A small garden tree takes a few hours; a large dismantle over a house is a full day or more. Every quote is free, fixed and provided before any work starts.

Do you need to climb the tree?

Not always. Where a tree is unsafe to climb, for example due to heavy decay or storm damage, Mitchell works from a MEWP as an IPAF-certified operator, so even dangerous trees can be removed under control.

Will you take the wood away?

Yes, full clearance is standard. If you would like to keep logs for firewood, mention it at the quote and we will cut and stack them, which usually reduces the price.
