Cleared woodland edge after tree and vegetation work in West Cumbria

Practical care for small woods

Many West Cumbrian properties come with a copse, a shelter belt or a few acres of mixed woodland, and most have had no attention for decades. Sensible management is straightforward: thin the crowded stems so the best trees can develop, coppice where the species suit it, remove dead and dangerous trees near paths and buildings, and replant the gaps.

The result is a wood that is safer, better for wildlife, and productive of useful timber and firewood rather than deadfall.

Felling licences and protected woods

Separate from garden tree work: felling beyond a small volume in any calendar quarter requires a felling licence from the Forestry Commission, and some woods carry TPOs or sit within designated areas. We check what applies and complete the paperwork before any work starts.

Woodland Management questions

Do I need a licence to fell trees in my own wood?

Above a small volume per calendar quarter, yes: a Forestry Commission felling licence. We check whether your planned work needs one and handle the application as part of the job.

Can you make use of the timber?

Yes. Thinnings and felled stems can be cut for firewood, milled where they merit it, or stacked for habitat. Nothing needs to leave the wood unless you want it to.
